Solar Design Considerations
Habitat affiliates that are interested in implementing solar on Habitat homes should take into account the following design considerations. These recommendations will optimize the efficiency of the solar system, maximize the benefit to Habitat homeowners, and control costs.
Besides solar design considerations, Habitat affiliates are encouraged to consider “demand-side” design principles such as efficient windows and appliances, use of overhangs, passive solar, and other steps to reduce electricity demand. A good resource for these considerations can be found here.

- As close as possible to south-facing
- 5/12 roof pitch is optimal in Virginia
- Rectangular in shape
- Size system according to usage
- Scalable
- Avoid shading of panels
